A GameStop clerk in Florida has been charged with manslaughter after police say he fatally shot a shoplifter.
According to police in Pembroke Pines, Florida, 33-year-old Derrick Guerrero confronted an adult male after he saw him shoplifting from the GameStop, where Gurrero worked.
Pembroke Pines is a city in Broward County, Florida, located 22 miles north of Miami.
The Associated Press reported that the man grabbed five boxes of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet “ultra-premium” trading cards, which retail for $120 a box, and ran toward the door.
When the man, who police did not identify, ran toward the GameStop door with merchandise, police said Guerrero allegedly pulled a concealed firearm from his waistband and shot once, hitting the victim in the torso.
The man did not threaten Guerrero or display a weapon, police said. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Guerrero was taken into custody, and has been charged with manslaughter.
